Windows 10 Device Usage: Creators Update After One Month

Posted May 24, 2017 | Hardware | Windows | Windows 10

For May, AdDuplex looks at the progress Microsoft has made deploying the Windows 10 Creators Update during its first month in the market. The firm also examines how the top PC makers are performing in key markets.

As you may recall, AdDuplex bills itself as the largest cross-promotion network for Windows apps. AdDuplex empowers developers and publishers to promote their apps for free by helping each other. And each month it provides a glimpse at which Windows devices people are actually using.

Here’s what we see this month.

Creators Update usage almost doubles. After a little over a month of availability, the Windows 10 Creators Update has been deployed to about 18 percent of all Windows 10-based PCs worldwide. This is up from the 10 percent figure we saw a month ago, and AdDuplex says the data confirms its belief that the Creators Update is rolling out at about the same speed as last year’s Anniversary Update. Given Microsoft’s newly conservative policies, this is, in fact, a big improvement, I think. Plus, the Anniversary Update eventually succumbed to reliability issues, which slowed the deployment of that update.

Creators Update usage varies by countries. If you look at the top 10 countries in which the Creators Update has been deployed, the United States, oddly, is at the bottom of the pack. (In the US, only 15.2 percent of Windows 10 PCs have been updated to the Creators Update.) This update has been deployed the most, as a percentage, in Germany, Brazil, Canada, Italy, and Russia.

The top PC makers haven’t changed. AdDuplex didn’t examine the top 10 PC makers by usage worldwide last month, but the figures haven’t changed since two months ago. HP is number one with 25.1 percent usage, compared to 16.3 percent for Dell and 11.8 percent for Lenovo. ASUS (9.1 percent) and Acer (8.7 percent) round out the top 5.

So how’s Surface doing? Microsoft, with 2.6 percent of the market, is 7th place among PC makers (this is for Windows 10 PCs only, to be clear) by usage. So there are about 13 million Surface PCs out in the world running Windows 10 right now (given 500 million active devices running Windows 10). But this has little bearing on actual sales, since many Surface devices sold so far are not running Windows 10, and many never will.
