Microsoft Announces Creativity App Support for Surface Dial

Posted April 10, 2017 | Microsoft Surface | Surface Dial | Surface Studio | Windows

Microsoft today announced that a number of third-party creativity apps have been updated to support Surface Dial and its unique capabilities.

“Empowering the creator in all of us is the purpose behind our products and initiatives at Microsoft, and supports our mission to empower every person and every organization on the planet to achieve more,” Microsoft’s Rui Li wrote in a new post to the Windows Devices blog. “We are thrilled to announce that partner applications like CorelDRAW, Autodesk’s SketchBook, Silicon Bender’s Sketchable, and Algoriddim’s djay Pro are adding unique capabilities to their software that enable Surface Dial offering customers a new spin on creativity.”

The following apps have been updated to support Surface Dial.

Algoriddim djay Pro. Available now in the Windows Store for $49.99, Algoriddim djay Pro includes unique location-aware Surface Dial integration. “With Surface Dial, users can browse their music library, scratch, scrub, loop, and precisely adjust knobs and filters on screen and for each deck individually, providing a truly innovative interaction paradigm to DJs,” Microsoft says.

CorelDRAW. When you put the Dial on the screen, your favorite tools will appear right there. You can find out more from the Corel website.

AutoDesk Sketchbook. Made for artists and designers who want their work to feel natural in a digital environment, Autodesk SketchBook gains additional choices and control when used with Surface Dial. You can control the canvas, brush, and color, zoom in and out, and access other controls. Find out more from AutoDesk.

Sketchable. This sketching app, available in the Windows Store, was demonstrated at the Windows 10 event in October. But it’s been updated to support additional Surface Dial features and streamlined navigation since then.

Adobe Premiere Pro CC. While this app is not yet available with Surface Dial support, Adobe has unveiled a technology demo that shows how it will work. “Adobe uses the Surface Dial for accelerated shuttling through clips and sequences with precision frame selection and immediate stop and start of playback, as well as incremental speed increase, decrease and reverse up to 32X playback,” Microsoft says. To learn more now, you’ll have to check out Adobe’s booth at NAB 2017. Cute.
